Skills of the Project Manager – what qualifications are required?

This section the the site documents an interesting and much-debated topic. Our industry is staffed by professionals who are qualified with varying degrees of formality:

    Picture of woman thinking
  • There are those that cannot practise without formal qualification and registration: Physicians, Pharmacists, Intellectual Property Agents, Lawyers, Accountants
  • There are others who may not be formally qualified, but within their disciplines there are generally accepted expectations of qualification: Research Scientists, who have degrees and PhDs, HR people having CIPD membership, technology Engineers, and so on
  • There is a third group for whom there is no accepted measure of qualification or accreditation. These include IT staff, Admins...and Project Managers!

We can however draw up a profile of a 'typical' Pharmaceutical Industry Project Manager from our many members – more detail here

There are several Associations and Bodies that are dedicated to Project Management, such as the APM and PMI. They offer qualifications, not all of which are valued or recognized, but are explained in more detail
